Sauraha Rapti Riverside

Chitwan's best sunset point — dugout canoes, crocodiles and grazing rhinos across the Rapti.

The Rapti riverside is the heart of Sauraha and Chitwan's most loved sunset spot. Running along the southern edge of the village, this stretch of the Rapti River marks the boundary of Chitwan National Park — so from the safety of the bank you look straight into wild country. Each evening the whole village drifts down to the water, lines the cafes and viewing decks, and watches the sun sink behind the forest while dugout canoes glide home. It is free, it is open to everyone, and it is the natural place to start or end a day in Sauraha.

What to see

By day the river is a wildlife corridor in plain view. Mugger and gharial crocodiles haul out to bask on the sandbars, and at dusk you may spot a one-horned rhino grazing on the far bank or a herd of deer slipping out of the grass. The bank itself is a birdwatcher's strip — kingfishers, egrets, storks and bee-eaters all work the shallows. Bring binoculars and keep noise low; the quieter you are, the more you will see across the water.

Sunset and sunrise

The famous sunset comes alive in the last hour of light, when the sky reddens behind the trees and the river turns to copper — one of the country's finest low-altitude evening views, in the spirit of Nepal's best sunrise and sunset spots. Photographers should arrive early to set up; our Nepal photography guide has tips for low golden-hour light. Dawn is quieter and often more rewarding for wildlife, with mist rising off the water.

Make the most of it

  • Claim a riverside seat about an hour before sunset in peak season.
  • Pair the view with a slow Rapti River canoe trip that pushes off from this same bank.
  • Never wade or swim — crocodiles are present and the current is strong.
  • Carry water, insect repellent and a warm layer for chilly winter evenings.

The riverside anchors our top things to do in Sauraha and is the perfect bookend to a Chitwan jeep safari from Sauraha. Plan timing with the best time to visit Sauraha and the wider Sauraha travel guide.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best sunset spot in Sauraha?+

The Rapti riverside at the southern end of the main village strip is the classic sunset point. Cafes and viewing decks line the bank, and the open water and forest beyond make for the village's most photographed evening view, with the sun dropping behind the trees.

Can you see wildlife from the Rapti riverside?+

Often, yes. Mugger and gharial crocodiles bask on the sandbars, rhinos sometimes graze on the far bank at dusk, and the riverbank is alive with kingfishers, egrets and other birds. Binoculars and a quiet, patient approach reward you most.

Is the Rapti riverside free to visit?+

Walking the village-side bank and watching the sunset is free. A short dugout-canoe trip on the river or any activity that crosses into Chitwan National Park needs a paid permit and a licensed guide, easily arranged through your lodge.

What time should you go to the Rapti riverside?+

Late afternoon, an hour before sunset, to claim a riverside seat and watch the light change. Dawn is also superb and far quieter, with mist over the water and the best chance of seeing wildlife come down to drink before the day warms up.
