Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale Trail
Nepal's rhododendron capital — a spring ridge trail above Taplejung blazing red and pink, with Himalayan views.
The Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale ridge — known as TMJ — is celebrated as the rhododendron capital of Nepal, a long forested crest above Taplejung that blazes red, pink and white each spring and offers sweeping views of Kanchenjunga and Makalu. It is the district's gentler trekking jewel, a accessible counterpoint to the demanding Kanchenjunga expedition.
What to expect
The ridge straddles the districts of Taplejung, Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha and holds one of the largest natural rhododendron forests in the world, with dozens of species. From around late March through April the hillsides erupt into colour, drawing photographers, botanists and walkers to one of Nepal's great spring spectacles. Outside the bloom the forest is still beautiful and green, but it is the flowers that make TMJ famous.
The walk itself is relatively gentle — a flexible three-to-five-day ridge trek with several access points, modest altitude and a string of viewpoints. Higher sections such as Jaljale open onto broad Himalayan panoramas, and sunrise from the crest can reveal the eastern giants glowing above a sea of forest. With no high passes or restricted-area permits, it is far more approachable than the Kanchenjunga trails.
Why it matters
TMJ is a flagship for Nepal's natural heritage: a vast, intact rhododendron forest that flowers on a scale few places can match. For trekkers it offers big-mountain views and rich biodiversity — including red pandas in the surrounding forest — without the cost, altitude and logistics of a major expedition, making it one of eastern Nepal's most rewarding spring walks.
