Suklaphanta National Park

Far-west grassland park near Dhangadhi with a famous swamp-deer herd, tigers, elephants and superb birding.

Suklaphanta National Park is the wild crown of far-western Nepal, a protected sweep of Terai grassland, sal forest and wetland in Kanchanpur district, easily reached from Dhangadhi. Once known as the Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, it is named for its great phantas — the open grasslands that hold one of the world's largest herds of swamp deer, and that give the far-west its most spectacular wildlife spectacle.

What to expect

The park's signature scene is hundreds, sometimes thousands, of swamp deer (barasingha) grazing the open phantas, especially around dawn. Among the grass and forest roam Bengal tigers, wild elephants, leopards and the rare hispid hare, while the wetlands and woodland edges teem with birds — over 400 species recorded, including the globally threatened Bengal florican. Jeep safaris cross the grasslands and skirt the marshes, with watchtowers offering wide views over the deer-filled plains.

Because Suklaphanta sees so few visitors compared with Chitwan or even Bardia National Park, a safari here often feels genuinely remote, with the grasslands stretching empty to the horizon. The mix of grassland, lake and forest in a compact, quiet park makes for some of the most rewarding wildlife watching in Nepal.

How to visit

Most travellers base in Dhangadhi or nearby Mahendranagar (Bhimdatta) and enter by jeep safari with a licensed guide, arranged through the park office. Game drives at dawn and dusk give the best chances of deer, tigers and birds. Bring binoculars for the florican and waterbirds, and pack for intense heat outside winter.
