Ghodaghodi Lake

A Ramsar-listed lake-and-marsh complex near Dhangadhi — superb birding and rich far-west Terai wildlife.

Ghodaghodi Lake is a Ramsar-listed wetland in Kailali district, an easy day trip east of Dhangadhi along the East–West Highway. Far more than a single lake, it is a sprawling complex of more than a dozen interconnected lakes, ponds and marshes ringed by forest — one of the largest natural lake systems in the lowland Terai and among the finest wildlife sites in far-western Nepal.

What to expect

The wetland is a magnet for waterbirds, both resident and migratory: ducks, storks, egrets, herons, kingfishers and cormorants work the shallows, while the surrounding forest adds woodland species, making this one of the best birding sites in the far-west. The lakes also shelter fish, turtles and marsh mugger crocodiles, and the forest fringe supports leopards and other mammals. Early morning, when the water lies mirror-still and birds are most active, is the magic hour.

Ghodaghodi is not only an ecological treasure but a place of local cultural and religious significance, with shrines on its shores and community festivals held at the lake. A quiet walk along the banks combines wildlife watching with a glimpse of how far-western Terai communities live alongside their wetlands.

How to visit

The lake sits beside the East–West Highway roughly an hour east of Dhangadhi, reachable by jeep, bus or local transport as a half-day or day trip. Bring binoculars, go early for the best birding, and pair the visit with the region's other wild sites — it makes a natural complement to a Suklaphanta National Park safari.
