How to Get to Ilam
Fly to Bhadrapur then drive into the tea hills, or take the long bus from Kathmandu — routes and times sorted.
Getting to Ilam means a journey into Nepal's far eastern hills. The quickest way is to fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (about an hour), then drive three to four hours up into the tea country. The budget alternative is a long overland bus across the East-West Highway, broken overnight. Here is how each option works.
The short answer
Fly and drive: Take a daily flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (Chandragadhi) airport in the Jhapa lowlands, then a private vehicle, shared jeep or local bus up the winding road to Ilam Bazaar, roughly three to four hours. Overland: A long-distance bus from Kathmandu runs along the East-West Highway to the eastern lowlands, with onward transport climbing to Ilam — figure on 16 to 18 hours in total.
Your options
- Fly to Bhadrapur, then drive. The most popular route. The flight is about an hour, and the drive up gains altitude through villages and tea gardens. Arrange a vehicle in advance or pick up a shared jeep at Bhadrapur.
- Long-distance bus from Kathmandu. Cheapest but slow and tiring. Take a night bus east, then change for Ilam in the lowlands. Best for budget travellers with time to spare.
- Drive from elsewhere in the east. If you are already in the eastern region — say around Dharan or the Koshi area — Ilam is a scenic hill drive away by car or jeep.
Getting around Ilam
Within the district, shared jeeps, local buses and hired vehicles link Ilam Bazaar with the tea gardens at Kanyam and Fikkal, the Mai Pokhari lake and the sunrise village of Shree Antu. Roads are narrow and winding, so journeys take longer than the distances suggest. For the high Sandakpur ridge, a four-wheel-drive jeep or a trek is needed.
Good to know
- Book flights early in peak season: Bhadrapur seats sell out in autumn and around festivals.
- Allow buffer time: Hill roads and weather can slow travel; don't schedule tight connections.
- Plan the wider trip: See getting around Nepal and pick your dates with the best time to visit Nepal.
